ARGs

ARGs (Alternate Reality Games) have interested since I heard about them about five years ago with the game Majestic. The game failed, but it was an odd experiment (especially for Electronic Arts, who haven't been doing too much experimenting since...). A couple others are ilovebees (a marketing game for Halo 2 by42 Entertainment) and perlplex city (going on now, even uses trading cards).

These games use email, phone calls, fax, and GPS coordinates (to name a few) to set up clues to some mystery. This kind of thing just seems like a good fit for some kind of art project. I have no idea what right now, but I've been thinking about this more and more lately. The problem is getting people aware of it, and even harder still: getting people to participate. I guess that's why these are usually tied to marketing or some kind of cash prize (and probably why Majestic ultimately failed, since it was just a game by itself).
